本展は、2000年代から国際展や美術館でパフォーマンス・アートを発表してきた米国在住のアーティスト、荒川ナッシュ医（あらかわなっしゅ・えい）のアジア地域においては初めての美術館での個展です。「Paintings Are Popstars」をタイトルとし、一作家の個展でありながら、荒川ナッシュに協力する20数名の画家による絵画が会場内に「登場」します。それぞれの絵画を存在感のあるポップスターと見做し、荒川ナッシュはその絵画のアティテュード(姿勢)から発案された協働パフォーマンスを発表します。

2021年にロンドンのテート・モダンで発表された、美術館の床に来館者が自由に絵を描ける参加型の作品《メガどうぞご自由にお描きください》から始まり、アート活動と子育ての両立にまつわる絵画の空間、絵具をトリートメントとして使うクィアな美容アクション映像、都市と色のスペクトラムに関する作品、絵画たちが交互に歌うかのような空間、20世紀の戦争や移民画家の歴史と国立新美術館の空間を結ぶ作品、福島やドイツの空を飛ぶ凧絵画、そして絵画が哲学を語りかけるクラブのような空間などが続きます。

子供、絵画、歴史、音楽、身体、会話、そしてユーモアがアンバランスに作用しあう荒川ナッシュの展覧会。国立新美術館の天井高8m、床面積2,000m2の空間で、荒川ナッシュとその協働者によるライブ・パフォーマンスが定期的に開催されます。さらに、「新美に来る観客と出会いたい」という荒川ナッシュは、「短くも親密な」展覧会ツアーも企画しています。

本展には、ミヨコ・イトウ、桂ゆき、河原温、国吉康雄、丸木俊(赤松俊子)、アンリ・マティス、ルイス・ニシザワ、白髪富士子、田中敦子、吉原治良、などの20世紀の画家から、ケルスティン・ブレチュ、レイディ・チャーチマン、ニコール・アイゼンマン、ユタ・クータ、南川史門、オスカー・ムリーリョ、シルケ・オットー=ナップ、ローラ・オーエンズ、ゲラ・パタシュリ、セス・プライス、トレバー・シミズ、エイミー・シルマン、八重樫ゆいなどの現代の画家の作品が展示されます。また映像作家の斎藤玲児、デザイナーの森大志郎も、本展に参加します。
